Burma: new Rangoon protests

Updated on 29 September 2007

By Jonathan Miller

Anti-government demonstrations continue in the Burmese capital as the UN envoy arrives for talks.

The UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari has arrived in Burma for talks with the military regime that has been running the country for four decades.

But there are concerns tonight that he has already been sidelined, flown directly from Rangoon - the focus of the protests - to the isolated new capital 250 miles north.

The White House has called on Burma's rulers to allow Mr Gambari free access to religious and opposition leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi.

Meanwhile demonstrators have taken to the streets again in Rangoon, but in smaller numbers, as thousands of government forces continue their violent crackdown.
