'New York City' ice shelf breaks up

Updated on 28 April 2009

By Channel 4 News

An area of an Antarctic ice shelf almost the size of New York City has broken into icebergs probably as a result of global warming.

Glaciologists in Germany say 370 square kilometres of ice has separated from the Wilkins Shelf.

It is the second time this month that ice this size has broken loose, following the shattering of an ice bridge apparently pinning the Wilkins Shelf in place between Charcot island and the Antarctic Peninsula.
